Harry Turtledove's cyclic history short story "The Glib Elephant" depicts a race betwixt a newly invented steam machine and a mammoth-drawn train stress 1782.

A station master entitled George Stephenson features as unornamented minor character alongside an Denizen steam engineer called Richard Engineer, likely indicating that they were analogous rather than historical script.
